Monday, 21 March 2022 12:16 GMT

The Italian claimed four titles when in the MotoGP™ paddock and he will be inducted into the Legends Hall of Fame at this year’s Italian GP

A familiar name from the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship will be inducted into the MotoGP™ Legends Hall of Fame in 2022 with 2010 and 2012 Champion Max Biaggi being crowned a MotoGP™ legend. Biaggi claimed four 250cc World Championship titles between 1994 and 1997 as well as his WorldSBK success and, due to this, he will be officially inducted at Mugello ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

Biaggi’s career on the world stage started in 1991 in the 250cc World Championship, and in his fourth season, he claimed his first world title. He followed that up with titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997 before moving up to the 500cc World Championship. He fought for the title as a rookie in 1998, finishing behind Mick Doohan, before finishing fourth in 1999.

At the turn of the century, Biaggi moved back into third in the World Championship and second in 2001 before a new era began with the MotoGP™ era. Biaggi continued to be so close but so far to a Championship in the premier class, finishing second in 2002 before back-to-back third places in 2003 and 2004. Fifth in 2005, his only winless full-season campaign inside the MotoGP™ paddock, was the end of his career on MotoGP™ machinery.

In 2007, Biaggi made his WorldSBK debut and immediately made an impact on the Championship with third in the standings. His first title came in the thrilling 2010 season and he claimed his second in 2012. His 2012 success would prove to be his last full year competing in WorldSBK, although he did return for two rounds and four races in 2015; securing a podium in Malaysia.

To celebrate Biaggi’s success in the 250cc and 500cc World Championships, Biaggi will be inducted into the MotoGP™ Legends Hall of Fame ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. The ceremony, due to take place before the Covid-19 pandemic, will happen in 2022 with countries easier restrictions, allowing Biaggi to enjoy the moment with his family, friends and members of the MotoGP™ paddock in May.
